This is a a debate for many, but for me it really comes down to common sense. All of us can always use more firearms training. However, Depending on what state you live, there may be requirements for initial trainings that far supersede what other gun owners are required to do in other states.
Let's take my beloved Washington State for example. To get a concealed weapons permit, there is no required training. You have to be 21 years of age and be able to pass a background check. Our neighboring state of Oregon at least requires a basic handgun safety class to even apply. I'm not saying this because I am in the firearms training business, but I've seen some really alarming things during my tenure as firearms coaching business. I have seen unsafe gun handling and lack of awareness. I often wonder what will the citizen do after they leave my training. Would they be willing to do more. The honest truth is that not everyone comes back for additional. Training. Some feel that taking a basic gun handling class is all that is needed. I am more interested on if you know when to shoot verses how.
I'm always amazed at new and old gun owners who refuse to seek more advance training when it comes to decision making. Learning the laws about using force to include deadly force should be one of your top priorities if you plan on having a gun for self defense. If you don't sign up for a class, remember that the world is at our fingertips and you can access all kinds of valuable information with a scroll and the click of a button. What do yall think? Do you really need to have more firearms training past the basics??
